1. Karlštejn

– A fortified Gothic castle originally serving as a depository for the imperial crown jewels of Charles IV, it was built between 1348 and 1357 and never captured. It’s the Czech castle most popular with visitors and they’re welcome at any time of the year.

2. Konopiště

– Once the residence of Ferdinand d’Este, heir to the Austrian throne, it houses large collections of weapons and hunting trophies.

3. Křivoklát

4. Koněprusy

– The largest Bohemian stalactite caves, they were discovered in 1950. The trip lasts about 5 hours.

5. Kutná Hora (UNESCO-listed)

– A charming town which, thanks to its silver (used to mint the famous Prague grosch), was the second biggest town in 14th century Bohemia. Its historical heart is also home to the famous St. Barbara’s Cathedral.

6. Český Šternberk

– A Gothic castle which belonged to the Šternberk family (except from 1949 to 1991). Visitors will be interested in its period interiors, portraits of family members and collections from the Thirty Years’ War period. 8km north of Český Šternberk is the small town of Sázava, the site of a Benedictine monastery since the 11th century.

7. Veltrusy

– A Baroque summer castle which has several oriental collections and a large English-style park. In 1754 it became a market selling goods produced in the Royal Bohemian Empire. It was also the very first trade fair.

8. Mělník

– A town situated at the confluence of the Rivers Elbe and Vltava, its Renaissance castle was once the home of royal Bohemian widows. It is a famous vineyard area whose wine can be tasted in the castle’s cellar. The trip lasts about 5 hours.

9. Nelahozeves

– A 16th century Renaissance castle, it offers collections of old European art. Visitors can see the house where the composer Antonín Dvořák was born and look round the museum.

10. Orlík

– This major Gothic castle on the Vltava dam was many times rebuilt as a royal fortress, but now it is a chateau owned by the Schwarzenberg family. Its richly decorated rooms are open to the public.

11. Zvíkov

– An early Gothic castle which has a remarkable arched courtyard and frescoes, it stands on a rocky promontory above the confluence of the Rivers Otava and Vltava.

12. Terezín

– A fortified town which is a national monument and concentration camp memorial, it is named after the Empress Maria Theresa. Visitors can see the Small Fortress, the Cemetery of Honour and the former crematorium.
