A trip to the middle ages
5-day tour
Day 1: Arrival in Prague
On arrival you’ll be welcomed by your guide and offered a welcoming honey drink made according to an old recipe. After a delicious dinner in the hotel the rest of the day is free.
Day 2: Prague
An all-day guided tour of Prague (lasting about 5 hours) on the theme of the mysterious Middle Ages. It will begin high above Prague at the Castle at Hradcany and its Gothic St Vitus’s Cathedral and Old Royal Palace. You’ll walk across the stone Charles Bridge to the Old Town and see its historical buildings, including the Old Town Hall, the medieval Týn Church and the early Gothic Old New Synagogue. The guided tour will end here and you’ll have a chance to look round the city and try the Bohemian cuisine in an Old Town wine restaurant or typical pub.
Day 3: Prague – Karlštejn – Kivoklát – Prague
After breakfast you’ll go on a day trip to the royal castles at Karlštejn and Kivoklát, the most famous and important Gothic buildings in Bohemia. The purpose is to find out why Karlštejn was built, and the answer is just as interesting and unusual: as a depository for the imperial and later also the Bohemian crown jewels. In the Royal Palace you’ll see an exhibition on the importance of Charles IV and his time. After a little refreshment in the form of lunch in the village of Karlštejn, the trip will continue through the romantic countryside. At Křivoklát Castle, which dates from the 12th century, you’ll have a chance to visit some of its historically important features – the chapel, the silver smithy, the knight’s hall, the library, the princes’ portrait gallery, the tower, the covered promenade and the torture chamber. The evening is free and you’ll be able to discover what Prague has to offer in the way of culture.
Day 4: Prague – Kutná Hora – Prague
Today there’s a trip to Kutná Hora. In the Middle Ages, thanks to the discovery of deposits of silver ore, it was the largest and richest town after Prague. The six hours you’ll spend there is a challenging schedule, given the number of sights there are to see – for example, the Gothic pearl that is St Barbara’s Cathedral, St James’s Church, the Mint and the cemetery chapel and ossuary. UNESCO was right to add the town to its world heritage list. The day will end in a Prague wine cellar, where you’ll be a guest at a medieval-style dinner.
Day 5: Departure from Prague
After breakfast you’ll leave for home.
